Becoming a Motivational Speaker

Becoming a motivational speaker is really more of a calling than a choice. It takes a very special type of person to stand up in front of a room full of strangers and speak to them not only in terms that they understand, but also in a way that moves the audience in a desired way.

In order to be a member of this elite group of individuals, you must not only have a great attitude but also a willingness to help people. Motivational speakers inform, they entertain, and they most importantly assist their audience in viewing a certain situation, circumstance, or life in general in a more positive light.

Once you are called to be a motivational speaker, there are many different ways to go about growing in the profession. The more traditional route is to go through speech courses in a college or university atmosphere. It is important to not only gain that core training, but to also have the experience that goes with it. Speech training programs will help you to lay the groundwork for your career by teaching you how to speak on a wide range of different topics. These programs also help you adjust to standing in front of a group of people and speaking in both an entertaining and positive way.

After you have earned your degree or have had other training that ensures that you are ready to step out into the world of public speaking, start making contacts. Look to your local community. There are a wide range of service groups such as Kiwanis, Key Clubs, Woman’s Clubs, etc in nearly every community nationwide who are always searching for speakers for their monthly meetings. All you have to is call them and volunteer your services. These positions probably will not pay, but they will get your foot in the door, allowing you to make contact with community members who can assist you in landing that first paying gig.

The main thing to remember is that becoming a great motivational speaker will take time. Unfortunately you probably will not be able to jump right in with both feet and start making large amounts of money right away. Despite this, if you stick with it and are willing to work your way up, you can become one of the elite few that are in high demand as speakers.

Another good way to build your connections and your training is to attend seminars held by other motivational speakers. There is a lot of information to be had at these training seminars and some good contacts that can be made not only with other motivational speakers but also with businesses in the area that will send people to the seminars for training. In order to be a great motivational speaker the important element is to just put yourself out there, and be ready and open to grow and improve. And the more experience you get, the better you will be.
